Student Blogging Lesson Plan Objectives: Students will understand how to write blogs. Students will learn how express their opinions in their blogs. Students will evaluate and comment on other students’ blogs.
Directions: 1. Show students various examples of educational blogs. (found and prescreened by teacher) 2. Ask students if they know what they are seeing. Let students respond. (Evaluating background knowledge) 3. Discuss with students what a blog is.
A blog is a Web site that allows groups or individuals to contribute their ideas, comments, or opinions in a journal format. Blog entries are often short and appear in reverse chronological order.
A blog entry can be created any time and any place from any Internet-enabled computer.
4. Discuss the Scholastic rules for blogging and allow students to add their own rules they determine to be important. 5. Show the students more examples of educational blogs or use the ones shown at the beginning of the lesson. 6. Introduce the blog rubric and discuss. 7. Have students assess the blogs using the blog rubric. 8. Introduce students to a blog creating website such as EduBlogs. 9. Model how to create a blog for your students. You can get their input on what to include in the creation of the blog. This could be your classroom blog. 10. Allow student time in the computer lab to create a blog of their own. 11. Instruct students to create their first blog entry. Let them know that the teacher will be assessing their blogs using the blog rubric we used to assess the other blogs. Their first blog entry will be about why they are excited to have their own blog and why they think blogs are important. 12. Explain to students that in the coming days they will be responding to their fellow students’ blog entries. Assessment: Use the blog rubric to assess the students’ first blog entry.
